Can we expand on the hate for the men’s team declining to interview in 2022? It was great that Jordan interviewed even through the tears; however, she shouldn’t have felt compelled to do so? (Which is likely the reason she went through with that interview). There is absolutely no obligation for elite athletes to interview if they do not want to – in fact – across many sports athletes always decline interviews.
You can’t advocate for athletes’ mental health and selfishly expect them to show up to every interview if they’re not in the appropriate headspace to do so. Shacarri Richardson has never spoken about the 100m final in Paris Olympics and guess what..? She doesn’t owe anyone her side of the story. The same goes for gymnasts. Any USAG leadership that requires athletes do interviews regardless of their headspace after a meet (don’t forget, these competitions can be extremely mentally draining) needs to be reconsidered.
This comment comes from a gymnast and a gymnastics fan.
Just gotta say, OKLAHOMA’s floor music is clearly chosen with as much intention as all other elements…choreography, Tumbling
