I would like to know if there’s still deductions for pulling down on leotards after saluting judges? I saw Tatiana from UCLA salute judges, then pull on  leotard then start her beam routine, also on floor after Jordan C. Saluted the judges she also pulled on the front and the back of her Leo before she started her routine she still got a 10? I remember yrs.ago, Florida missed out on nationals because Van Fleet pulled on her Leo, and got a deduction that disqualified the team

Hi, I am a judge, there is no deduction for leos in college whatsoever. Whether they pull on their leotard or if it is too revealing, there are no deductions as long as the team is wearing matching leotards. I am not familiar with that Florida example you gave, and I find it hard to believe that is what happened.

The Florida incident was over 25 yrs. ago, she picked her leo out and the deduction was enough they didn’t qualify to Nationals. I was at the meet, I still thought it would be a deduction since you Never see any girl pick her leo out, when I saw Tatiana & Jordan do that “After”saluting to judges, I thought “deductions”, so your saying they can now pick out they’re leo anytime? Without deductions? I’ve never seen any gymnasts do that until UCLA at Big Tens!??? Just like hair below shoulders? After Jamison Sears from Alabama started putting her hair up, she started getting better scores?

Yes, there can be deductions in NCAA gymnastics for adjusting a leotard after saluting the judges

, although the strictness of enforcement can vary.

According to the NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Rules Modificationsand related judge newsletters, the salute signifies to the judges that the gymnast is ready to begin their routine.

Here are the key points regarding this procedure:
  • The Procedure: A gymnast must salute, signaling the start. Any significant adjustment (pulling at the leotard) after this signal can be viewed as "preparing" the routine after the start, which violates the premise of being ready.
  • The Deduction: Historically, this has been penalized as a deduction for improper starting procedure or, in extreme cases, a technical penalty.
  • 10.0 Evaluation: If a gymnast receives a 10.0 despite this, it means the judges, using their "up to" discretion, did not view the small adjustment as a significant execution error, or deemed it occurred just before the official start (prior to the judge actually looking up).
  • 2024–2025 Rules Focus: Recent rules emphasize a professional and controlled start to the routine. While minor adjustments before the salute are okay, once the hand is raised, the gymnast should proceed directly to the apparatus or begin their routine.

While some judges may ignore a quick, minor tug, it is risky, and the rules generally dictate that the routine should be executed immediately after the salute.

In Jordan’s case they totally ignored it, it wasn’t a small adjustment, she pulled in front and in back
