The History of Italian Gymnastics Commission

It’s time for a commission on the history of Italian gymnastics. We dive into everything from the earliest days of circus arts, to the Ferrari revolution, to the historic Paris silver-medal.

THE HISTORY OF ITALIAN GYMNASTICS COMMISSION

This is a Commissioned Episode by Galactic Champion Level Club Gym Nerd member, Jasmine. 

• From the earliest days of circus arts and ancient bath gymnastics, to the Ferrari revolution, MTV reality show phase, and the current golden era, we discuss the history of Italian gymnastics. We discuss controversies, predictions, and give some love to the men (we love you, Nicola Bartolini!).

PART A: INTRO AND SETTING THE SCENE

• We are living in the golden age of Italian women’s gymnastics. The team is coming off its most successful Olympics ever with three medals: team silver, D’Amato beam gold, and Esposito beam bronze.

PART B: CIRCUS ARTS AND EARLY DOMINANCE

• The Italian men were one of the original dominant teams from the early beginnings of competitive gymnastics, taking 3 straight Olympic men’s all-around and team gold medals
• Is it Barani? Or Branny?
• How did early circus and performance roots lead to Italian gymnastics dominance in the early days?

PART C: THE LADY OF THE RINGS

• Laura Micheli, the ”lady of the rings,” was Italy’s first WAG champion

• Between 1966 and 1989, the Italians won zero medals at Worlds or Olympics and weren’t close

PART F: BICEPS AND BREAKTHROUGHS

• Jury Chechi finally broke Italy’s no-medal streak with success on rings starting in the late 1980s

PART G: THE FERRARI REVOLUTION

• In 2004 the Italians did not qualify a team and had zero WAG athletes in any finals. By 2006 they won a European team title and a World Champion
• We bring back the old debate: should Vanessa Ferrari have still have been World Champion despite a fall?
• The fourth-place curse that fell upon Ferrari in 2012 and 2016
• Should Ferrari have won floor at the Tokyo Olympic Games?

PART H: VITE PARALLELLE – THE MTV ITALIAN GYMNASTICS REALITY SHOW ERA 

• The wildly popular reality show that followed gymnasts training and studying at the Federal Technical Center for Artistic Gymnastics in Milan
  • We see Elizabeta Preziosa, Carlotta Ferlito, Elisa Meneghini, Vanessa Ferrari, Enus Mariani, and Nicola Bartolini
  • Vanessa Ferrari refused to partake, but appears in an episode on her own
